    Topical melatonin - clinical studies

Been lurking around for a few months. Now that I'm out of conventional treatment options (minox, fin), I'm looking for some alternatives...

    Any thoughts on this:

Since safety and tolerability in all of the studies was good, the topical application of a cosmetic melatonin solution can be considered as a treatment option in androgenetic alopecia.

I went through it wuicly, seems like it mostly prevents the hair loss, definitely not a cure, but would be interesting to read the opinion of people who are more expert

I actually think this is interesting; in this regard, it's also interesting that Bayer Healthcare recently purchased the rights for the topical formulation and sells it under the name "priorin LF" (which is obviously different from the orginal "priorin", wehich does not contain melatonin). you can even buy it online.

That is a lot of density increase, this thing deserves at least some consideration if the numbers are true

Does anyone have any more info on this? The main author of the study linked to above published something on melatonin and alopecia in women back in 2004:

To the authors' knowledge, this pilot study is the first to show that topically applied melatonin might influence hair growth in humans in vivo. The mode of action is not known, but the effect might result from an induction of anagen phase.

Are there any products available for the scalp with melatonin in it? It's not a cure, obviously. But, hey: if it helps...

The asatex site is interesting, but I can't find a place where they list the strength, that women study used a .1% solution

Also, I was under the impression that melatonin was a controlled substance in Europe

Is it feasible to make a lotion out of melatonin pills? They are dirty cheap

The Equisomin one I have..years ago and then again recently. I noticed how nice it was for my scalp more than anything when I first used it- contains no alcohol or pg. But even after using it a bit I started using other things- and ever since have always used more than one topical, so it's hard to say what did what.

I think they also have it in their "Formulator" for making a custom topical..but that gets even more expensive.

Pretty sure that other product has been around since at least 2008..so yeah, you'd think SOMEone out there has used it.

I've found posts from 2004, but the best case reported until 6 weeks, with no results obviously.

Some seemed to be using melatonin creams like the ones you find on amazon

Very interesting because I have a bag of pure melatonin, I haven't read the article but I will and might give it a go to see if it works.

From that salon listed on their site:

Asatex comes in a box of 20 mono-dose ampules. Each box is a 30 day supple when used for the recommended 5 out of 7 days per week. The manufacture recommends the product be used continually for 3 months as a loading period and then on a one month off, one month on schedule from there on. One box is 59.95 plus $5 shipping. If you buy the 3 box loading period supply it costs $161.85 ($18 savings) and shipping is free.

Water, Alcohol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PEG-8, Polyquaternium-10,
Fragrance, Menthol, Citric Acid, Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Camphor, Disodium
                              EDTA, Biotin, Melatonin.
I've asked what % the melatonin is..will post if he can share.
